![]() I was the principal dancer, danced lead roles and premiered a new ballet. When I was 16 I started working for the Kiev Ballet company. ![]() But then they took us to a show and I disappeared during the first act they found me by the stage transfixed. I was there for a few months before I saw my first ballet. When I was nine, I won a scholarship to Kiev Ballet school. I did gymnastics when I was little and was advised to do ballet. When did you know you wanted to be a ballerina? If you really want to do something, it means extra work. It made me aware that things are not necessarily finished, even when the work is done. I remember that even if we were closing, if people knocked late to buy something, my mum would still open up. I helped out after school and would fetch the things that people bought. My mum and dad worked in a grocery store in Bucharest. ![]() How did your childhood influence your attitude to money? She is the first ballerina to receive the prestigious Prix Benois de la Danse twice, and her work with fellow principal and now fiancé, Johan Kobborg, has been hailed as the first great ballet partnership of the 21st century. From Romania, Alina trained with the Kiev Ballet school as a child and was just 19 when she was made principal dancer with the Royal Ballet in London. Alina Cojocaru, 38, is the lead principal dancer with the English National Ballet.
